A young boy’s attempts to seek help went in vain as his mother, Sarah Safranek, tragically ended his life after multiple attempts to kill him. Nathaniel Burton, just seven years old, lived in constant dread of his mother’s sinister intentions, expressing his fears to his grandmothers and foreseeing his own demise. Despite his distress signals and interventions by social services, Safranek’s lethal actions towards her son went unnoticed, culminating in his suffocation in their residence.
Nathaniel, before his untimely death on February 18, 2021, confided in his grandmother about his mother’s murderous intentions, recounting incidents where she tried to smother him. Court records depict a harrowing picture of Nathaniel’s daily existence filled with terror and struggle to breathe, as he disclosed his ordeal to his family members.
Safranek, now serving a 35-year prison term for first-degree murder, vehemently denied Nathaniel’s claims, dismissing them as lies. Despite his paternal grandmother’s efforts to alert authorities, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) failed to intervene effectively, despite multiple visits to Nathaniel’s home in the years leading up to his tragic death.
In a disturbing revelation, it was disclosed during court proceedings that Safranek had conducted eerie online searches before and after the fatal incident, hinting at her preoccupation with harming her child. Her internet queries ranged from inquiries about cremation costs to voodoo practices, reflecting a chilling mindset.
Judge Anthony Peska mandated that Safranek must serve the entirety of her sentence and adhere to a three-year supervised release upon completion. This verdict comes as a form of justice for Nathaniel, whose life was cut short by the very person meant to protect him.
