In a tragic turn of events, a man’s romantic evening plans were abruptly shattered when a freak accident took his life. Humberto Hernandez, a Californian resident, met his untimely demise after a driver’s blown tire caused a fire hydrant to be launched into the air, ultimately striking him on an East Bay street.
According to Motorcycle Officer Eddie Bermudez, the fatal incident occurred with such unlikely precision that had Humberto been just slightly to the left or right of his position on the sidewalk, he would have been unharmed. The 24-year-old was walking alongside his wife, carrying flowers and cherries for their dinner outing, when a Ford Escape driven by a woman in her forties veered onto the pavement due to a blown tire.
The SUV collided with a fire hydrant, dislodging it and propelling it towards Humberto, hitting him from behind. Tragically, the impact proved fatal, despite the hydrant’s subsequent trajectory through a fence. Authorities noted that the force of the water pressure caused the 500-pound hydrant to behave like a projectile.
Witnesses described the surreal and devastating scene, highlighting the rarity and severity of the accident. Humberto was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind his wife, who had no immediate support or resources in the country. The couple, recent immigrants to the United States, had been residing in a trailer and were solely reliant on each other for companionship and survival.
