“Starmer Urges Seizing Gaza Peace Deal for Two-State Solution”

Keir Starmer emphasized the significance of the recent Gaza peace agreement, stating that it presents the best opportunity for a two-state solution in many years. He urged all parties involved to seize the moment to bring an end to a dark chapter in history. The Prime Minister highlighted the immense challenges faced by hostage families and civilians in Gaza over the past two years, emphasizing the monumental task of rebuilding the war-torn region. Despite the difficulties, he described the fragile peace in the Middle East as a moment of great relief globally.

Starmer credited the UK’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state for contributing to peace-building efforts, even amid criticism for this move during the UN assembly while hostages were still held by Hamas. He addressed Members of Parliament after attending the peace deal signing in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, co-hosted by Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Starmer acknowledged that this peace deal represents the first real opportunity for a two-state solution since the Oslo Accords more than three decades ago.

In his parliamentary address, Starmer underscored the need to close the distressing chapter in history while recognizing the ongoing challenges faced by hostages, victims’ families, and civilians in Gaza. He emphasized the importance of sustained efforts to ensure the lasting success of the peace agreement, acknowledging the complexities ahead and the crucial role of diplomacy and expertise in its implementation.

Starmer acknowledged President Trump’s role in the peace agreement, attributing the success of the deal to his efforts. He also highlighted the UK’s proactive stance in securing a ceasefire, releasing hostages, and facilitating aid delivery to Gaza. The UK’s support for the peace process and commitment to the reconstruction of Gaza were reiterated by Starmer, who described the task as immense but essential for international collaboration.

The necessity of humanitarian aid access to Gaza, transitional governance support, and monitoring the ceasefire process were all emphasized by Starmer. Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran, with a personal connection to Gaza, expressed mixed feelings post-ceasefire, emphasizing the need for a two-state solution for lasting peace in the region. She called upon the PM to fulfill the promise of a Palestinian state, echoing the sentiments of past generations.

In response, the Prime Minister pledged relentless efforts to advance towards a two-state solution, emphasizing the commitment to building on the recent peace agreement. He reiterated the importance of continued work towards a lasting resolution that ensures the security and dignity of both Israelis and Palestinians.
