Nicky Henderson remains calm ahead of the upcoming showdown between Constitution Hill and rising star The New Lion on Saturday. Constitution Hill, once a dominant force in jumping, faced setbacks last season with falls at key races like the Champion Hurdle and Aintree.
To ensure Constitution Hill’s peak condition, Henderson took proactive steps, including an equine vision check at the equivalent of Specsavers. Despite recent challenges, Constitution Hill is positioned as the third favorite in the Champion Hurdle betting, trailing behind Willie Mullins’ mare Lossiemouth and The New Lion.
The clash at the BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle in Newcastle will be a significant test for Constitution Hill, especially against The New Lion, a standout from the Cheltenham Festival. Other contenders in the mix include Anzadam and the reigning Champion Hurdle victor, Golden Ace.
Bookmakers like Coral have tight odds, placing Constitution Hill and The New Lion as equal favorites. Henderson expressed confidence in his horse’s preparations, noting a successful workout session with jockey Nico de Boinville.
While the race initially had four entries, the addition of Nemean Lion expanded the field. Henderson deliberated on race strategies, mentioning the absence of a pacemaker. He plans to attend the Newbury event with horse Hyland in the Coral Gold Cup, while owner Michael Buckley will oversee Constitution Hill’s race at Newcastle.
