An ex-prison officer revealed that the inmate who fatally stabbed Ian Watkins, the convicted paedophile and former Lostprophets frontman, is likely to gain respect and “bonus points” among fellow detainees. The attack occurred at HMP Wakefield, where Watkins was serving a 29-year sentence for child sex offenses. Emergency services responded to the incident but pronounced Watkins dead at the scene.
According to the former officer, Tony Cottenden, who worked at the prison for nine years, units housing paedophiles usually have limited interaction with other inmates due to the nature of their crimes. Offenders convicted of child sex offenses are generally not well-received by other prisoners. Cottenden explained that high-profile inmates like Watkins are often targeted for attacks, which can elevate the status of the attacker within the prison community.
In addition to gaining respect, inmates might earn “bonus points” for attacking a prisoner to settle debts or improve their standing among peers. Cottenden highlighted the segregation and escorting protocols for vulnerable prisoners like paedophiles within the prison population to ensure their safety during movements.
Following Watkins’ death, it is expected that child offenders at HMP Wakefield may face restricted movements and challenging conditions in prison. Cottenden emphasized the separation of paedophiles from the general prison population for their safety and the management of potential risks.
Watkins, 48, was sentenced in 2013 for various sex crimes, including attempting to rape a fan’s baby. The incident at HMP Wakefield is under police investigation, and both the Prison Service and West Yorkshire Police have confirmed the assault and subsequent fatality. Watkins had previously faced violent incidents in prison and additional legal troubles for possessing a mobile phone while incarcerated.
Despite attempts to appeal his sentence, Watkins’ prolonged jail term was upheld due to the severity of his crimes, which included disturbing acts captured on video, such as the attempted rape of a baby. His offenses led to consecutive prison terms alongside his initial 29-year sentence.
