The study, known as the Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR), aims to understand the potential risks to individuals exposed to these toxins.
Participants in the study, whether American or Canadian, are monitored for any health symptoms related to algae exposure. The research involves collecting samples, including blood, urine, and breath, to analyze the effects of long-term exposure to airborne algae toxins.
According to Gregory Dick, director of the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research at the University of Michigan, algae toxins can become aerosolized and travel through the air, potentially affecting coastal communities as well. The study is focused on determining the extent of these toxins in the air and their impact on human health.
