Genetics professor and nutrition specialist Tim Spector recently discussed organic produce on the ZOE health podcast with co-host Jonathan Wolf, aiming to clarify whether “organic” consistently signifies higher quality, as reported by Surrey Live.
Typically, “organic” denotes food produced without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers, leading to higher price points compared to non-organic alternatives. Despite the cost factor, Tim emphasizes that there is one organic item he never compromises on due to its exceptional flavor.
When asked during the podcast about the top organic food choice, Tim highlighted tomatoes, emphasizing their regular consumption in his diet. He noted the superior taste of Italian and Spanish organic tomatoes and suggested that opting for organic versions may not significantly raise costs compared to non-organic options.
While the price of organic food may deter some buyers, selecting frozen or canned organic options could be a cost-effective alternative without compromising on nutritional value. Tim recommended organic frozen foods as a viable choice, noting that they are often less expensive due to lower transportation costs and longer shelf life.
For safer consumption, Tim advised washing produce with baking soda before eating, as he believes it is more effective than using water alone.
