“Eat Sardines Daily for Better Brain Health and Skin”

For just 45p at Tesco, a food item can significantly reduce the risk of dementia and improve skin health. Sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, promoting heart health and bone density.

These tinned fish are also a great source of essential nutrients like calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, and vitamins B12, A, E, and K. Health specialists suggest a daily intake of 1.1-1.6 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, with each sardine tin providing around 3g.

Researchers at University College London (UCL) studied fruit fly brains and human brain cells to explore the impact of specific fatty acids like omega-3 on neurological health. The lab flies were genetically modified to simulate motor neurone disease and a rare form of dementia known as frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

Professor Adrian Isaacs, the lead researcher from the UK Dementia Research Institute, stated: “Our research indicates that higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the brain could be advantageous for motor neurone disease. The next step involves testing this theory on humans.

“We need to identify the specific fatty acid to test on humans and determine the best method to deliver sufficient quantities to the brain. Subsequently, we aim to progress these findings into a clinical trial.”

A study conducted in the US revealed that consuming omega-3 during midlife can lower the likelihood of developing dementia. Individuals with higher omega-3 levels performed better on cognitive assessments and had a larger hippocampus, a critical area of the brain for memory function.

In addition to the cognitive benefits, sardines also positively impact skin health. With omega-3, collagen, and selenium, these fish are believed to enhance skin elasticity and hydration, along with being a rich source of vitamin D.
