“Olive Oil Mayonnaise Price Surge Amid Global Olive Oil Crisis”

The ongoing cost of living crisis continues to impact consumers, with food prices steadily increasing in supermarkets. Many individuals are opting for store brands over name brands to save money, but this strategy doesn’t always result in significant savings. Marks & Spencer, known for its higher-end offerings, usually offers reasonably priced everyday items.

For instance, M&S’ Classic Mayonnaise is priced at £1.50 for a 500ml tub, slightly higher than Sainsbury’s and Tesco equivalents. However, a recent visit to M&S revealed a stark pricing difference in their new Only… Ingredients range, particularly with the Olive Oil Mayonnaise, priced at £4.50 for a 250g tub.

This premium mayonnaise, made with only six high-quality ingredients including olive oil, egg yolks, mustard, vinegar, salt, and water, highlights the retailer’s focus on simplicity and quality. Despite having fewer ingredients, the product comes at a significantly higher cost compared to the classic version.

While the Olive Oil Mayonnaise stands out for its price, other products in the Only… Ingredients range are more in line with regular pricing. The range includes items like British pork sausages for £4 and white rolls for £2, offering a mix of quality and affordability.

The escalating cost of olive oil globally has contributed to higher prices in the UK market, impacting various olive oil-based products like mayonnaise. Factors such as reduced global supply due to poor harvests, imbalanced supply and demand, increased import costs, currency fluctuations, and retail pricing strategies have all played a role in the surge in olive oil prices.
