Australian racer Joey Mawson has been identified as the individual accused of sexually assaulting a nurse at the residence of Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher. Allegations suggest that Mawson, aged 29, allegedly assaulted the woman while she was unconscious following a social gathering at Schumacher’s estate in Gland, Switzerland.
Mawson refutes the accusations, asserting that the relationship between them was consensual and intimate. He claims that they had previously shared a kiss at a nightclub in Geneva.
Originally from Sydney, Australia, Mawson was once predicted to excel in Formula 1 before opting to return to racing in his home country due to a decline in performance.
He had a close friendship with Schumacher’s son, Mick, and competed against future stars of the sport such as Lando Norris of McLaren and George Russell of Mercedes.
A trial was set to commence this week, with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the District of La Cote preparing a detailed indictment for the case. Despite being a two-time champion of the Australian S5000, Mawson, now disqualified from racing due to a doping scandal, failed to appear in court on the scheduled date.
Despite his absence, the trial was initiated but then postponed to a later unspecified date, as reported by The Sun. Notably, no members of the Schumacher family are implicated in this legal matter.
The indictment by the Public Prosecutor’s Office accuses Mawson of assaulting one of Schumacher’s nurses while she was unconscious after consuming vodka cocktails. The nurse, who remains unnamed, is reported to have been a live-in caregiver for Schumacher, who requires continuous assistance following a tragic skiing accident in 2013.
According to court documents, the alleged incident took place on November 23, 2019, while Mawson was present at Schumacher’s residence. He was playing pool in the billiard room with two other staff members when the nurse, after completing a strenuous shift, joined them.
Following the nurse’s retirement to bed, Mawson purportedly returned to her room and engaged in non-consensual sexual activity. The nurse later lodged a criminal complaint over two years later, in January 2022.
