“Convicted Killer Communicates Calmly During Lethal Injection”

Rapist and killer Brian David Steckel, despite receiving a lethal injection, was able to communicate coherently for a period of time. The 36-year-old American, convicted of the brutal rape and murder of 29-year-old Sandra Lee Long, managed to engage in calm conversation with his family and observers during the final moments of his life, while a combination of deadly drugs circulated through his system.

Witnesses to the execution reported hearing mechanical sounds and physical spasms, indicating a possible failure of the administered drugs. However, Delaware officials asserted that the execution proceeded as planned, explaining the prolonged process as a courtesy extended to Steckel for his final statements.

In his concluding remarks, Steckel expressed regret and resignation, stating, “I entered here without resistance, and I acknowledge my punishment. It is time to depart. I appreciate you all… I am at peace.”

Steckel’s conviction stemmed from the tragic 1994 rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long in Wilmington, Delaware. In a horrific turn of events, Steckel deceived Long into her apartment under false pretenses, and when she rebuffed his advances, he violently assaulted her, including attempting to strangle her with pantyhose and a sock.

After the assault, Steckel dragged Long into a room, set her and the curtains ablaze, resulting in her death from smoke inhalation and severe burns over 60% of her body. Following the heinous act, Steckel continued his disturbing behavior by taunting authorities as the self-proclaimed “Driftwood Killer,” making menacing calls to a potential victim and the local newspaper.

Subsequently, Steckel was apprehended while intoxicated on a pending harassment charge, confessing to the crime the following day. He was convicted on multiple counts of first-degree murder during his trial and received a death sentence. Addressing the jurors during the penalty phase, Steckel acknowledged his wrongdoing, stating, “I urge you to hold me responsible for my actions… I know what I did was reprehensible and selfish.”
