Sky Sports Host Shares Cancer Battle Story

Sky Sports host Jo Wilson recently shared her harrowing experience battling cancer, expressing her initial fear of death and the emotional turmoil she faced upon learning about her diagnosis. In June 2022, at the age of 41, Wilson was informed of her cervical cancer after a routine medical examination. Despite the challenging journey that followed, including the spread of cancer to her lymph nodes and the demanding six weeks of treatment, she eventually received a clean bill of health in June 2023.

Having joined Sky Sports in 2011, Wilson underwent a series of treatments including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy to combat the disease. While these interventions saved her life, they brought about early menopause, significantly impacting her career in broadcasting. Remarkably, Wilson’s cancer diagnosis came just two years after the birth of her daughter, Mabel, in 2020.

In a Sky Sports News documentary named “Football, Cancer, and Me,” Wilson candidly shared her feelings of uncertainty and the burden of keeping the news to herself. Reflecting on her experience, Wilson emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention promptly if any health concerns arise, hoping to inspire others to prioritize their well-being.

During the documentary, Wilson engaged in conversations with her Sky Sports News colleague Emma Saunders and former manager Tony Mowbray, both of whom have faced their own battles with cancer. Mowbray disclosed his bowel cancer diagnosis from the previous year, while Saunders recounted her journey dealing with a brain infection following a thyroid cancer diagnosis, which required surgery and left her partner shocked by the visible aftermath.

The documentary sheds light on the personal struggles and resilience of individuals in the sports industry facing cancer, highlighting the importance of early detection and support systems. Sky Sports continues to expand its offerings, enhancing its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to include popular streaming services like HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+, and Hayu, along with extensive coverage of sports events, including over 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL, Formula 1, darts, and golf.
