A father of four, Torquil Gundlach, recently shared his harrowing experience of falling ill after unknowingly consuming a bottle of vodka spiked with thallium, a highly toxic substance commonly used as rat poison. This sinister act was orchestrated by the disgraced GP Thomas Kwan, who had previously targeted Torquil’s father-in-law, Patrick O’Hara, by sending poisoned bottles of alcohol disguised as gifts from a fictitious ‘wine and drinks club.’
Kwan’s malevolent scheme unfolded when he disguised himself as a Covid nurse to administer a lethal pesticide to O’Hara, causing severe harm. Torquil, a 51-year-old project manager, unknowingly received a poisoned vodka bottle from O’Hara, leading to his own illness. Kwan has admitted to attempting to murder O’Hara and administering the toxic substance to Torquil.
Reflecting on the traumatic incident, Torquil expressed pity towards Kwan for the havoc he has wreaked upon his own life and family. Despite feeling unwell after consuming the tainted vodka, Torquil emphasized his concern for his family’s safety, especially his teenage children who could have accidentally consumed the poisoned alcohol.
As a biochemistry graduate, Torquil delved into research upon discovering the presence of thallium in the vodka, highlighting the gravity of the situation. He underwent counseling to cope with the emotional aftermath of the incident, which unfolded as details of the fabricated ‘Northern Wine and Drinks Tasting Gentlemen’s Club’ came to light during Kwan’s trial.
Kwan, previously a GP in Sunderland, was exposed for his elaborate murder plots and financial motives, including a bid to acquire a lucrative GP practice and significant assets. His malicious intentions and disturbing actions have left a trail of devastation, culminating in a minimum 31 and a half-year sentence for his attempt to murder O’Hara. Kwan is set to be sentenced for his crimes related to the wine club plot on January 30 at Newcastle Crown Court.
