A father was recently fined £170 for exceeding the 20-minute time limit while enjoying his meal at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Walsall, West Midlands. Ed Chatterton, aged 42, received the penalty after spending extra time in the car park following his purchase of Chicken Selects, fries, and a milkshake in July.
Despite McDonald’s indicating the time restrictions through signage, Ed claimed he was unaware of the rule. He expressed disappointment at the steep fine, highlighting that 20 minutes is insufficient for drive-thru customers to finish their meals, especially considering potential queues.
Having received no initial notification of the fine, Ed was surprised when debt collectors contacted him. The threat of legal action prompted him to speak out about his experience, emphasizing the lack of communication prior to the escalated penalty.
Addressing the situation, a McDonald’s spokesperson reiterated the parking policy, emphasizing the importance of adhering to time limits for all customers. Additionally, Ocean Parking clarified the sequence of events leading to the fine, suggesting a potential discrepancy in Ed’s registered details.
Despite the ongoing dispute, both companies emphasized the necessity of compliance with parking regulations and encouraged individuals to utilize the provided resources for clarification or appeals.
