A heartless individual has been sentenced to jail for setting dogs on badgers in a cruel act of entertainment. Lloyd Davies, 23, from Bryn Heol, Bedwas, near Caerphilly, South Wales, released lurchers, including his own dog Shirley, to attack the wild animals and recorded the brutal assaults. He also allowed others to use Shirley for similar attacks, leading to severe injuries for the dog.
Davies has been prohibited from owning any animals for life and received a 16-week jail term at Newport Magistrates’ Court. He pleaded guilty to charges under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006 related to the killing and mistreatment of badgers and his dog Shirley.
District Judge Sophie Toms described the actions as deliberate and sadistic cruelty that was shared for entertainment, labeling it as one of the worst cases of cruelty she has encountered. Davies was also ordered to pay £400 in costs and a £154 victim surcharge. The RSPCA’s special operations unit uncovered 13 videos showing the attacks on badgers, prompting the legal action.
A spokesperson for the RSPCA’s Special Operations Unit emphasized the severity of the cruelty inflicted on the badgers and highlighted the harm suffered by Shirley. The spokesperson affirmed a zero-tolerance policy towards those who harm wildlife for pleasure, promising thorough investigations and accountability.
Pc Rhys Jones of Gwent Police expressed satisfaction at the outcome, stressing the importance of collaboration with the RSPCA to prevent such acts of cruelty. David Griffiths from Natural Resources Wales condemned the incident as a disturbing case of cruelty against a protected species, emphasizing the legal protection afforded to badgers and the commitment to upholding wildlife protection laws in Wales.
This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of mistreating animals and the dedication of enforcement agencies to ensure justice for wildlife.
