Virgin Media O2 users are facing a new scam alert as the telecoms company warns of a significant increase in fake call centre numbers generated by AI. The company has raised concerns about millions potentially falling victim to these fraudulent activities, leading to the theft of personal information, including sensitive banking details.
Reports indicate that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fake customer service numbers via search engines or AI tools. Virgin Media highlighted that criminals are leveraging AI-powered tools to display fake phone numbers, websites, and search results, ultimately aiming to deceive individuals and commit fraudulent acts.
With the increasing reliance on AI-generated search results, individuals are at higher risk of unknowingly contacting cybercriminals. Virgin Media emphasizes the importance of only using authentic service numbers provided on official company websites, apps, or billing statements.
To reach O2, users are advised to dial 202 from an O2 device, while Virgin Media customers can call 150 from their landline. Additionally, caution is advised when dealing with numbers from search engines, social media posts, or AI tools.
Furthermore, individuals are urged never to disclose security codes or personal information to unsolicited callers, regardless of their claimed identity. Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the growing threat posed by AI tools enabling fraudsters to create convincing fake numbers, putting individuals at risk.
Virgin Media O2 is actively combating scams by blocking known fraudulent numbers and flagging suspicious calls using AI technology. To enhance safety measures, individuals are encouraged to report suspicious numbers to 7726 to facilitate the prompt shutdown of scams.
By remaining vigilant and reporting potentially fraudulent activities, everyone can contribute to safeguarding against scams and protecting fellow consumers.
