“Transportation Secretary Warns of Air Travel Disruptions”

The US Secretary of Transportation has warned of potential air travel disruptions if the government shutdown continues, stating that sections of the nation’s airspace could be closed. Sean Duffy made the statement during a press briefing, emphasizing the possibility of mass flight delays, cancellations, and airspace restrictions due to staffing shortages.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, nearly half of major air traffic control facilities are experiencing staffing challenges as around 13,000 air traffic controllers are working without pay during the shutdown. Many controllers are taking on additional jobs to make ends meet, further complicating the situation.

Duffy highlighted concerns about safety implications, stating that while the system is currently safe, the prolonged shutdown introduces additional risks. The government shutdown, which started on October 1, has left essential workers without pay and disrupted government services.

Even prior to the shutdown, controllers were already working overtime due to staff shortages, with some covering multiple positions. Duffy noted that the current situation is exacerbating the workload for controllers who are facing increased absences and responsibilities.

Recent reports from the Federal Aviation Administration revealed high absence rates among air traffic controllers in the New York area, indicating the severity of the staffing issues. Duffy emphasized the limitations in addressing the funding challenges faced by air traffic controllers due to legal constraints and government processes.
