U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, strongly denounced the siege carried out by Israeli settlers on a Palestinian American family’s residence in the West Bank, labeling it as a “horrific act of terror.” The settlers have been causing distress to the family in the village of Qusra since Sunday, despite Israeli military intervention attempts to de-escalate the situation.
A group of settlers, comprising numerous individuals, has been harassing the occupants, throwing stones, attempting to damage a nearby stone wall, and preventing the family from leaving the premises, leading to a shortage of supplies. The family, including Qusai Abu Rida and his teenage son, who were defending their home, were eventually relocated by the Israeli military to another residence but are still restricted from leaving the vicinity.
Loui Ridi, the homeowner, revealed that the settlers had been targeting his property for months before the recent escalation. Huckabee disclosed that at their request, Israeli authorities have taken action to remove the individuals behind the siege, emphasizing that the behavior exhibited was meant to intimidate and harass the family.
The Mayor of Qusra, Abed Al Athem Wadi, reported that Israeli soldiers had evacuated and seized six homes in the village, including three hilltop residences under siege. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights criticized the actions, accusing them of forcing residents off their land. The Canadian government and various human rights organizations have condemned the surge in settler violence in the West Bank.
In response to the unrest, the Israeli military intervened by dismantling illegal outposts and detaining individuals involved, while declaring the area a closed military zone.
