An Illinois woman, Corie Walsh, faces three counts of first-degree murder following the tragic death of her two-year-old son, Barrett, in their suburban Chicago home on September 1. Prosecutors revealed that Walsh, 40, had been highly interested in the high-profile trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy. Just hours before her son was discovered deceased in the basement, Walsh was actively discussing the Clancy case with friends.
According to court records from NBC Chicago, Walsh was found with self-inflicted injuries in the home, where she later confessed to authorities that she believed her son was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ,” leading her to commit the heinous act. Her defense attorney, Andrea Lyon, attributed the incident to a psychotic episode, labeling it a tragic event for the entire family.
Authorities were alerted to the situation when a neighbor found Barrett in the basement and immediately called emergency services. Despite resuscitation efforts, Barrett was pronounced dead at a hospital, with the autopsy revealing asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck as the cause of death.
During a search of the residence, police found Walsh in a bathtub filled with bloody water, sustaining cuts to her wrists and thighs. She was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries. The revelation that Walsh had been monitoring Clancy’s trial emerged following a mistrial declaration in the Clancy case, where jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict regarding the murder of Clancy’s three children in 2023.
While Walsh’s interest in the Clancy trial has been disclosed, authorities in Illinois have not linked it to her son’s death, emphasizing that no public evidence connects the two incidents. Both the Frankfort police and Will County prosecutors have not commented on the matter.
