In a recent data release, it has been highlighted that the most deprived area in England falls within Nigel Farage’s constituency of Clacton. Specifically, a neighborhood in Jaywick, Clacton-on-Sea, has been identified with the highest deprivation score among over 33,750 small local areas nationwide. This ranking was determined by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, which assessed various factors such as income, employment, education, health, crime, housing, and local environment conditions.
The Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) are considered the primary method for pinpointing disadvantaged and poverty-stricken regions in the UK. The latest data takes into account the impact of Covid-19 on local communities and marks the first update since 2019.
Notably, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party recently unveiled plans to eliminate personal independence payments (PIP) for individuals with non-serious anxiety disorders, aiming to implement more frequent reassessments for eligible claimants. This proposal is part of a broader strategy to reform benefits and potentially save £9 billion annually by 2029.
The area in Clacton with the lowest deprivation score, known as Tendring 018A, is situated to the west of the town and predominantly consists of detached bungalows on the Brooklands Estate. This region was previously identified as the most deprived part of the country in the 2019 rankings.
Furthermore, Blackpool emerges as a focal point of deprivation, with multiple neighborhoods ranking among the top 10 most deprived areas in England. This high concentration of deprived neighborhoods contributes to Blackpool being labeled as the most deprived local authority in the country, followed by Middlesbrough, Burnley, Manchester, and Birmingham.
Conversely, the least deprived areas in England are found in St Albans, with specific regions like Harpenden Town and Harpenden East showcasing lower levels of deprivation compared to other areas. These findings shed light on the disparities in living conditions across different regions in the country.
